Lusitano, Black composer of the Renaissance | Seattle, WA

  • St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 2100 Boyer Avenue East Seattle, WA, 98112 United States (map)

Embark on a journey to 16th-century Rome & Portugal with music by Vicente Lusitano (1520–1561), the first published Black composer. Motets by Lusitano are interspersed with works by both fellow Portuguese musicians and composers with Roman connections, including Ghiselin Danckerts and Nicola Vicentino, both of whom were involved in a notable debate with Lusitano concerning the nature of chromaticism in music. The Marian Consort makes its US West Coast debut with its award-winning interpretations of this incredible repertoire, presented by our Friends Cappella Romana.
